When this type of disagreement occurs, it can provide ammunition for those disinclined to the use of rhetorical criticism. However, such disagreement does not mean that macro-rhetoric is not valid; rather, it means that the books of the NT have other narrative intersections and goals in addition to persuasion. In fact, the schemes suggested by Campbell and Witherington are not radically different. And while we may not be able to say with certainty that macro-rhetoric exists, the scope, logic, and intent of parts of the NT lead many to believe that there is a persuasive scheme at work.
