High up in the mountains of the Serra da Estrela, deep in the heart of central Portugal, shepherds wear burel. Made from Bordaleira sheep wool, this traditional fabric is incredibly comfortable, warm and water-repellent – characteristics that Isabel Dias da Costa and João Tomás valued while on a hiking trip to the mountains. On their return to Lisbon, the business partners invited young designers to take a contemporary twist on this age-old fabric, and Burel Factory was born. The store still sells up-and-coming designers’ interpretations of burel – think fuzzy rugs, comfy footstools and quirky vases.
