An hour later, Alex had gone over the vault with silverlight, ghostlight, and even amberlight for good measure. He found nothing useful. There were plenty of fingerprints but no way to tell which, if any, belonged to the Brothers. He could see where they’d opened their vault door in the wall, but the chalk they’d used was ordinary and, of course, he had no way of re-opening their vault, even if he had their key.

“Tell me you’ve got good news, Lockerby,” Detweiler’s voice interrupted him as he packed up his kit bag.

“I’m sorry, Lieutenant,” he said. “They just didn’t spend enough time here.”

“Damn it,” Detweiler growled. He looked as haggard as Nicholson had. “We need to find these boys. Right now we’ve got every officer we can get our hands on keeping watch on the rest of the banks in Manhattan. We’ve even got detectives standing watch.”

That explained the reason Danny had been called away.

“We can’t keep this up,” Detweiler said. “Sooner or later we’re going to have to stand down and then these brothers will have the run of the city. Hell, they’ve got enough cash now they’ll probably hole up in the Waldorf Astoria eating caviar and drinking champagne until we give up.”

He didn’t say that the papers would blame him, but he didn’t have to. Alex knew the score. Detweiler could try to push the blame off onto Detective Nicholson, but that wasn’t his style. The lieutenant might be a hard-ass, but he was a fair hard-ass.

“Do we know if the brothers went out the front when they left?” Alex asked.

“Eyewitnesses say they went out the way they came in.”

Alex picked up his bag.

“Well, I’ll check the alley, then. Maybe I’ll find something there.”
