At the offices of Alder & Powney a few days later, Leonard closed the file he’d been working on and added it to the growing pile he’d dealt with this morning. His client list was growing, and he was satisfied that he would be the next in line for a partnership. Daphne would be content at last.

He reached for the next file, a complicated probate case. The receipts were finally in, and distribution to the heirs could proceed. Some fortunate nephews and nieces of the late Reverend James Armitage, a bachelor, were going to receive cheques for considerable sums, as were a number of ecclesiastical charities. He smiled. This would require at least an hour in the company of the office cashier.

He dialled Lily’s number. ‘Cashier’s office.’

‘It’s been too long since I’ve kissed you,’ he whispered.

‘Good morning, Mr Warwick. I’m just helping Mr Irwin with a completion. Would it be all right if I rang you back?’

‘He’s not peering down your cleavage, is he?’

‘Of course.’

‘Tell him you’re mine.’

‘That might be difficult.’

‘I want you, naked across my desk. Now.’

‘Thank you, Mr Warwick. I’ll let you know the moment I’m free.’

She hung up. Leonard sat there, holding the phone receiver to his ear as her voice echoed into silence. In his mind’s eye he could see Irwin standing over her desk, ostensibly looking at the ledger in front of her, but enjoying the view of her brassiere as he peered downwards. He knew that she would be blushing after their little exchange, and he imagined that Irwin would think he’d been the one to bring a flush to her cheeks.

He put the phone down and tried to turn his attention back to the case in hand. But though his aim had been to torment Lily, he’d managed to arouse himself as well. He shifted in his chair. When Lily called back, he’d better get her to come to him. If he walked through the general office to hers in this state, he’d be in serious trouble.

By the time Lily had completed the tasks that Irwin had set her, Leonard had managed to calm himself. Nevertheless, when she closed his office door behind her, he felt his blood rise again.

‘You are a very naughty man,’ she said, trying but failing to look serious. ‘What if he’d heard you?’

‘Then we would have been discovered and he would have been as jealous as hell.’

‘We’d have been out on our ears, more like. You’ve got to be more careful, Leo.’

‘I know. But it’s killing me. I want to tell the world about us. I’m sick of all this subterfuge.’

She came forward and sat down on the other side of his desk. ‘I know it’s hard, darling, but we have to keep it a secret. We’re both married.’

He sighed. ‘Do you have to keep reminding me?’

‘Yes. Because we’re playing a dangerous game. We could lose everything – our jobs, our children…’

‘It won’t come to that.’

‘It could.’
