The talk of many mothers and daughters was often about issues faced at work and can therefore be described as career mentoring. Moreover, many daughters were enjoying the change in the status of their relationships, which often meant that they dispensed advice too. Kelly, a ‘daughter mother’ said:

“It got to a point when I was about 22 where we can go in and out of that mother–daughter relationship. She can give me advice and be a supportive mother, like with my doctorate. Then somewhere in my twenties I learned I could flip that around and sometimes be supportive to her … Whereas some of my friends have very fixed relationships with their mothers. Always mother supporting daughter. Now I feel I can help her as well.”
