Chapter Fifty-Two

Jay's Request

I slept in the next morning. It felt so good. With everything that had been going on lately and all the bad dreams I’ve experienced, it was such a welcome feeling to wake up relaxed. Last night was absolutely wonderful. Adam and I had such a good time. I stayed in bed just lying there, remembering every detail of our date. There was no stress, no creepiness, and definitely no zombies.

What a strange world we were living in. Who would ever have thought that zombies would be roaming our land and attacking everything in sight? Who would have thought I would meet someone so charming and considerate, in a time when we should all be freaking out of our minds? I couldn’t even wrap mine around it. Life was definitely changing, and I had to get on board. No more waiting in the shadows or letting someone else tell me what to do. I had had enough of that. It was time for me to stand strong and take the offensive position. I knew what I wanted, and I knew I had to do things I had never done before. Seeing Adam again would be part of my change, I hoped.

I heard Jay go downstairs, so I got up and followed him down. He was already dressed for work.

“You’re working today, sweetie?” I asked. “It’s Saturday.”

“I know, but Dr. Blight is getting ready for another trip. He’s on to something big.”

Jay poured himself a bowl of cereal and grabbed an orange out of the refrigerator. “I don’t know all the details, but he thinks he may have some ideas about some regeneration of cells to slow down this apocalypse.”

“Wow! That is big! How did he figure that out?”

“He hasn’t yet, but he and Aria are working non-stop, and they feel very close. They’re getting ready to go to New York. I guess there’s another doctor that Dr. Blight has been corresponding with who has been researching viruses that antagonize animal behavior. The data is astounding. I’m learning so much, and I feel like I’m actually contributing to a cause.”

I hugged my son. “I am so proud of you. I know this is not what you really wanted to do with your life, but you are definitely answering God’s calling to shine His light wherever you go.”

“Speaking of wherever I go,” Jay paused. “The doctor wants to know if I can accompany him this time. There’s going to be a lot of data entry work, which would be easier to do if I were right there at the time of discovery. I told him I would talk to you first. I don’t want to leave you all alone, especially after what happened the other day.”

I looked at my son, sitting there, eating his breakfast, just like he used to when he was little. It was hard sometimes to see him as a man, especially when there’s a bowl of Lucky Charms and a glass of iced tea in front of him.
