Chapter 11

Diversion

Mae’c

Hurrying from Neyve’s building, Mae’c mentally kicked himself all the way home.

He’d kissed her.

Where the heck had he put his brain? Yeah, a kiss on the cheek wasn’t as big a deal as a full on lip-lock, but it could still be considered as crossing any number of lines too. She was emotional. He was just being nice, right? She wouldn’t think of it as a big deal, and he could play it off as no big thing. She wouldn’t think twice about a measly kiss on the cheek, right?

He couldn’t believe he’d kissed her.

The next morning he showed up at Neyve’s building with more than a plan to entertain and distract her. Unslinging a small pack from his shoulders, he held it out to her, instructing, “Go pack another couple of outfits. Comfortable ones. As much as I enjoyed your dress last night, it won’t be practical where we’re going. And did you happen to buy any swimwear with my credit line? Which you almost completely drained, by the way.”

“Why? Where are we going?” she asked, completely ignoring the credit line comment and the proffered pack, her brow furrowed with suspicion.

“That’s for me to know and you to find out,” he evaded. “Anyway, even if I did tell you, you still wouldn’t know where we were going.”

He didn’t let her hard stare move him, crossing his arms and casually leaning against the door frame, amused by her challenge and fully capable of waiting her out.

“Fine,” she relented, snatching the bag from his grasp. “Gimme a minute.”

Leaning against a wall, he watched as she triggered some drawer spaces, pawing through them before selecting a few items to shove into the sack. Last night took its toll on her. The dark circles highlighting her eyes were his first clue. Even the way she moved appeared slightly altered. It almost physically hurt to see her look so fragile.

“Okay, let’s go,” she grumbled after making a quick stop in the water closet.

“Do your best to curb your enthusiasm, will ya? It’s a bit overwhelming.”

Her glare of reproach only made him laugh, a chuckle continuing all the way on and then off the elevator as she fumed at him. Outside the building, Mae’c stopped at the rear of a hovercraft transport.

“We’re going in that?”

“Quite the perceptive-Polly, aren’t you? Yes, I checked this out for the day.”

“For the day? Then why did I pack extra clothes?”

“Hey, you never know. Always be prepared, et cetera, et cetera. We’re also required by law to make certain preparations for any trips outside the city.”

“Hmph. Didn’t know my ride happened to be with Mr. Boy Scout.”

“What’s a Boy Scout?” he asked, releasing the door locks.

A big ball of mottled fur sprang out of the vehicle, hopping on its hind feet for attention and thoroughly distracting Neyve from answering the question.

“What the quark!”

“Oh! Sorry.” Mae’c signaled the creature to settle down with a look. “This is Heta, my llynog.”

“Your what? It looks like a fox,” Neyve commented, tentatively holding out a hand for the llynog to sniff.
