At one point in my life, I took a job lecturing on a cruise ship. I showed slides, did the whole dog-and-pony show a few times, and that was it.

I had a lot of free time. I ate a lot. I was busily photographing one day when the purser came up to me and the conversation went something like this: “Photographing?” “Yup.” “Can I ask you a question?” “You just did.”

“First of all, we are in an inland waterway in Alaska and you are lucky that it is a gorgeous day. You can see the shore clearly on the port and starboard sides of the ship. This is all quite unusual, as the fog normally limits the visibility to about 20 feet. So, I was just wondering, since you have the view you have, why the devil have you been shooting the wake of the boat for the last two hours?”

“You know how in school,” I said to him, “as a kid, you loved music but hated math?” “Yeah.” “In both cases, you became aware of patterns, repetitions, ratios, variations, and subtle shifts of emphasis. That’s what excites me about the wakes of boats. They never change and then they do change according to speed, turns, other boats, or wind, or God knows what.”

“And that turns you on?” “Yup.” “Carry on.”

This shot was taken from a helicopter, but go to the back of any boat and you’ll be mesmerized.
