Figure 5.2 Self-Esteem

However, when esteem is a constant, despite life's inevitable vicissitudes and curveballs, we control it internally. No matter how we perform, the result doesn't affect our self-worth. We know who we are. The current vernacular is “comfortable in our own skin.” Hence, we're not thrown down the stairs simply because we lost a game or inconsolably glum if we weren't chosen for the team. Similarly, we're not convinced of our immortality or imperviousness just because we won or were successful or chosen.

What are the attributes of presence in a person?

Well prepared and in possession of the facts and all sides—not just our own—of any issue.

An effective use of language—including metaphor, vocabulary, examples, and inflection—to convey ideas.

Brevity. People who possess the attribute of brevity are immediately and clearly understood. They tell people what they need to know and not everything that they know.

A strong sense of humor (especially self-effacing humor) and adept storytelling to make a point.

Generous. Generous people share credit, accept blame, and will always offer to pick up the check.

A sense of proportion. People with a sense of proportion don't panic; they understand perspective and have global frames of reference. They try to avoid polarization.

Finally, as previously noted, confidence. Confident people enter a room with grace. They smile. They are comfortable in being who they are.4
