CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Thursday was Daddy day for Sarah since Ben was off work from Wildfire. Whenever his daughter had been with her mother overnight, their routine usually involved Destiny bringing Sarah to Benâs apartment after breakfast, but it was after eleven before Ben finally got the knock on his door that day.
âAbout time, Destiny,â Ben scolded.
Sarah ran into his arms. âHey sweetie! I missed you so much.â
Destiny barged into his apartment without regard to either one of them.
âBenji, we need to talk.â
Ben set Sarah down and told her to go to his room and play. She happily obliged. When the toddler was out of earshot, Ben turned to Destiny. She was standing behind the couch picking at her fake fingernails.
âLast time you said we needed to talk, you told me I was going to be a dad,â he remarked callously. âEven though I know thatâs not the case this time, should I sit down?â
Destiny nodded. They sat on opposite ends of the couch and faced each other.
She drew in an exaggerated breath and giggled. âThis is going to be harder than I thought.â
âWhatâs going on, Destiny? Just say it,â Ben urged.
âVictor and I are engaged!â she announced happily.
âThatâs great news for you!â Ben quickly replied. âBut what does that have to do with me?â
âWell, youâre Sarahâs father and I know you have always been there for her. Things have been pretty easy between you and me since we found out about her. But you and I both know we werenât going to live across the hall from each other forever.â
âDestiny get to the point,â Ben said with annoyance. He didnât like where this conversation was headed.
âYou know I could have moved somewhere nicer since Victor can afford it, but we chose to live here in my apartment when we got together because of my arrangement with you. But, well, Victor has a job offer in California.â
The air was instantly sucked out of Benâs lungs like someone shoved a vacuum nozzle down his throat. Destiny, of course, didnât seem to notice his flushed face.
âWe talked about it and heâs going to take the job. Itâs an incredible opportunity for us and I wouldnât even have to work anymore. I hate my barista job anyway and only did it because I had to. Itâs like destiny,â she giggled at the mention of her own name with something so kismet to her. âVictorâs already found us a really nice house and Sarah would have a bedroom and a playroom. Itâs even in a gated community, and she would have a huge backyard,â she continued to ramble selfishly. âVictorâs really excited about us starting our own family, too, so there is room in the house for more kids. Wouldnât it be great for Sarah to have a brother or a sister?â
Ben was speechless. His mind wrangled with a thousand different thoughts, most of which involved Destinyâs untimely demise. It took him a moment to gather his composure. Understandably.
âSo, youâre moving Sarah to California? Do I
