Chapter 14
The Collector
Shortly after WrestleMania, WWE once again had their yearly draft and I was moved to Raw — alone. For the first time in three years, I was going to be without Finlay. It was terrifying; it felt like I’d had my security blanket taken away. I’d always felt that as long as I was with Fit, I’d have something to do and someone to go to bat for me. There were no such guarantees for a midget alone on Raw. On the final episode of WWE Superstars before we were separated, Fit and I had a mixed-tag match against Tyson Kidd and Natalya. After we’d won the match, Fit led the crowd in singing “When Irish Eyes Are Smiling” to send me on my way. (I only found out he was going to do that in Gorilla just before we went out, when Fit leaned in to me and said, “Well, I guess I’m singing to you after.”) It ended up being really emotional, even if Finlay didn’t know any of the words apart from the chorus. When I hugged him, I told him I was going to miss everything about working with him. He just replied, “You’re going to be okay.”
I was told the reason I was being moved away from Fit was because I was going to be paired up with a new Irishman who was coming in. Sheamus was a tall, muscular guy with a pale-skinned, red-haired look that stood out from the rest of the roster.
He got a big push as soon as he first came in and it took a lot of people by surprise. I know he’s the stereotype of the sort of wrestler Vince has always tried to promote, but there were a lot of talented people in WWE at that time who had more experience. Despite that, they put the WWE title on him before he’d been with the company a full year.
It was good that I wasn’t paired with him because he wouldn’t have worked as an Irish-jigging babyface and I think it would have been tough to turn me heel again at that point.
Without anything for me to do on Raw, I mostly ended up doing backstage comedy segments with Goldust. I worked with him on live events as his manager-slash-sidekick and, even though they were just ways to get me on the shows, working with him was a great experience, especially since he’d been one of my favorites when he first came to WWE in the mid-’90s.
Although I was on the company’s flagship brand, the move started to feel like a step backwards, as I’d gone from appearing on TV every week with Finlay in ECW to being on Raw only once in a while and on the secondary show WWE Superstars the rest of the time. Also, Finlay was higher up in ECW than Goldust was on Raw, so that limited my opportunities, not that I ever expected to be paired up with a World Champion.
To keep me busy, they had me go out and shoot T-shirts into the crowd using a pneumatic cannon.
