CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE
Henry’s head still hurt when he slowly grasped consciousness. But it was no longer the same blinding, illness-inducing pain that overwhelmed him before. Instead, he felt more of a deep throbbing that would probably linger for a long time. His face and body hurt more, as he remembered the beating from the crooked police officer. His hands were also sore from the beating he gave Lewis; he hoped his wife’s killer felt just as awful when he woke up. Henry heard a quiet, intermittent whistling and soon realized it came each time he exhaled through his nose, which was probably broken. But at least it no longer hurt so much to breathe.
Once again Henry felt the sensation of movement and didn’t have to open his eyes to realize he was in the sky lanes. When he recalled being handed over to the Asian black-market organ smuggler, he wondered if he was traveling in the international lanes. He kept his eyes closed in case he was being watched. Escape seemed impossible if they were high above the Pacific Ocean, whether he could somehow overpower his captors or not. His body was stretched out and when he opened his eyes a crack, enough light filtered in so he could tell he was in a backseat instead of a dark cargo hold. His arms and feet still weren’t bound.
They must really think I’m seriously hurt and won’t wake up, Henry thought. Or they’re so well-armed and ready to shoot that they’re not worried about me causing trouble.
Henry didn’t know how these organ transactions happened; it was incredibly rare that a kidnap victim survived long enough to tell tales. An awful thought suddenly entered his mind: could they have gutted him already? His body was in so much pain that he wasn’t sure he’d notice if any parts were missing. His heart raced at the idea, a good sign to know that everything in his chest was still intact.
Henry opened his eyes and looked around a few seconds before closing them again. His mind was still foggy and slow to process information but a clearer picture of his situation began to take form. He was correct in assuming he was in the back of a shuttle but this was much smaller than Lewis’ BMW, much older and run down. Nobody was in the back with him – nobody aiming a weapon at him, ready to shoot at the first sign of movement. The sky outside the window wasn’t quite as dark as night, more like the early morning just before sunrise or the late evening just after sunset. He waited for several minutes and heard no talking. His chances were much better if only one kidnapper was in the shuttle.
Less afraid of being caught, he opened his eyes and lifted his head, looking around more closely. His head felt light as a balloon but he still focused enough to see he no longer wore torn, blood-stained clothing. Someone had gone through the effort
