MARTINA

My footsteps echoed down the empty hallway as I hurried toward Ted who stood outside Darren’s hospital room. After a quick hello hug, I said, “How is Mom holding up?”

His expression was somber. “She’s a wreck, Martina. I’ve never seen her like this. I don’t know what she’ll do if he doesn’t make it.”

That explained why he was worried. A stressed-out alcoholic, even one sober for a decade, was a reason for concern. “Well, she has you and me. We’ll help her through. What’s the latest?”

“The doctor said the surgery was a success. They were able to stop the bleeding. They think he might pull through. Your mom hasn’t left his side since they wheeled him into the room.”

After a prayer for Darren and my mother, I said, “Any idea who did this to him and why?” Not that I didn’t have my own theories. But Ted had been in law enforcement for more than thirty years before he retired, I was sure he had some old friends who could provide information.

“I made a call over to the warden. It sounds like they suspect it’s a member of the 98Mob.”

As expected. “Is anyone being held accountable?”

Ted pursed his lips and shook his head, frustration evident in his eyes. “No, it’s the same old ‘nobody saw anything’ story. You don’t snitch in prison, but word around the block is that it was, in fact, the 98Mob.”

“Does the warden have a theory as to why they went after him?” It wasn’t common for a gang to take out one of their own unless they snitched or double-crossed them.

“You’re not going to like this, Martina.”

I shut my eyes and braced myself for what was coming.

“It was because of the investigation. Somebody found out. They wanted to make sure the case remained closed. That’s much easier with Darren dead. Considering the sheriff’s department is a lot less likely to spend time opening a closed case with a signed confession from the suspect. If he were alive and wrongfully convicted, and there was another suspect, that’s a different story. They would have good reason to put resources into proving his innocence.”

We knew the 98Mob could potentially hurt Darren and the rest of our family based on the calls I received to stop my investigation. “Did they say how they figured out I’m looking into the case?”

“Nothing specific. But word around the block is that some people are getting nervous that someone with your track record for solving cases is digging into their business. You’ve ruffled some feathers. And the working theory is they’re tying up loose ends.”

That wasn’t anything new in my world. I was a feather ruffler if there ever was one. But this was the first time the crime involved a member of my family.

“But why do they care?” I said, still struggling to believe the entire scenario.

“No one’s talking about the ‘why,’ just that they don’t want anyone opening up the investigation.”

That didn’t sit right with me. “Thanks, Ted. Have you told my mom any of this?”

“I did.
