CHAPTER TWENTY NINE

O’Reilly drove slowly to the hospital. He wasn’t in any rush to get there to give Harry Vernon the news that not only was his daughter dead, he was suspected of killing her. He passed the Football Club on the right and drove into Beaucamps. The hospital was situated on a quiet street in the west of the suburb.

O’Reilly knew something was wrong the moment he turned into the car park and stopped outside the entrance. Two police cars were parked directly in front of the main door. He got out of the car and approached them. Harry Vernon was sitting in the back of one of them. His head was resting on the window and his eyes were closed. O’Reilly wasn’t even sure if he was awake or not.

A PC came out of the hospital and walked over to O’Reilly. “Morning, sir. He’s in a bit of a state but we managed to get him into the back in the end.”

“What the hell is going on here?” O’Reilly said.

“We were told to come and arrest him, sir.”

“Who told you that?”

“Orders from the Super I suppose.”

O’Reilly was furious. “You suppose? The man is deeply traumatised. His wife and daughter have been murdered, and you suppose?”

“We were just following orders, sir.”

O’Reilly walked back to his car and slammed his hands on the roof. He knew he shouldn’t take it out on the young PC but he was livid. He hadn’t been looking forward to breaking the news to Harry Vernon then arresting him, but he knew it was the right thing to do. And now Harry had been thrown into the back of a police car by two faceless officers in uniform. He calmed down a bit and walked back to the police car.

“Where are his clothes?” he asked the PC. “The clothes he was wearing last night need to be collected and sent to Forensics immediately.”

“Don’t know, sir,” the PC replied. “We were just told to come and get him.”

“This is an absolute balls-up,” O’Reilly said. “A real fekkin balls-up.”

O’Reilly didn’t even bother to knock on Superintendent Hayes’ door. He stormed into the office.

“What the hell is going on?”

She was speaking to someone on the phone. Her eyes widened and she cupped her hand over the receiver. She frowned at O’Reilly and took her hand off the phone.

“I’m going to have to call you back,” she said and ended the call.

“What the hell is going on?” O’Reilly said again. “I went to pick up Harry Vernon only to find I’d been beaten to it. I offered to do it.”

“I didn’t know that,” Superintendent Hayes said. “And I will appreciate it in future if you would knock before you come barging into my office.”

“I made it very clear during the briefing that I would be the one to arrest Harry Vernon,” O’Reilly said. “And nobody had any objections. So why the hell did I find him thrown into the back of a patrol car like a common criminal?”

“Mr Vernon is a suspect in a triple murder investigation.
