Rodrigo

Rodrigo studied the mess and shook his head. Ticks running like hell as the dog was about to get a chemical bath time.

“Sir, we’re being hailed by the Pyramid,” Akeley called out. “I have Aileen on line. Visual as well as audio.”

“Put her on the main screen, Lt. Commander,” Rod replied.

Aileen and Lazarus both, crowded in a little to be in the shot. Smiling.

“By now, you’ve scanned the escape pods, Admiral,” Lazarus said. “We sounded the alert to abandon ship here once we took over the secondary bridge. My recommendation to you would be to withdraw some, as everyone on the main station is legally required to come rescue, and a few might get too close to you for comfort.”

“Pilot, back us out and bring us around to where we have both the Pyramid and the Station in front of us, but well off to one side,” Rod said, trusting Akeley to figure out what he needed. She was good at that. “Lazarus, now what?”

“We own the Pyramid, sir,” Pancho replied. “From here we threaten the station to surrender and we’ve just doubled our firepower, instead of having to destroy the Pyramid to make our point.”

“How did you manage to damage that thing so badly, Pancho?”

“That was a Star Spear, Admiral da Silva,” the man turned serious. “Fired point blank from a stable platform, without shields. I believe I mentioned that Innruld vessels are not up to Rio Alliance standards as warships?”

“You did, Lazarus,” Rod joined the man in seriousness. “I do not think I really believed you until this moment.”

“The Kirov Lance, aimed just right, could quite possibly blow Oton Mari Station into about five major components, Admiral,” Lazarus continued, eyes and voice deadly. “With sufficient kinetic force imparted from the explosion that most of them would probably deorbit fairly quickly. Hopefully, it will not be necessary.”

“Hopefully, you are correct, Captain,” Rod agreed. “What are your orders?”

He liked the way Lazarus blinked and maybe flinched a little, but he was the man in charge over there. Ajax was just the galaxy’s biggest freaking hammer, but there were no nails that needed driving at the moment.

At the moment.

On one of his smaller screens, Rod watched ships start to depart from Oton Mari Station. A few freighters but mostly small mining craft. On the one hand, no small miner could rescue more than a single pod, but they also had waldo arms designed for holding and manipulating asteroids and rocks, so there might not be a better design to capture an escape pod and get it to safety.

Whatever safety there might be, with the Sword of Damocles hanging off on a flank, ready to annihilate the station should they give him a good enough reason.

“Fusilier, stand down,” Rod ordered. “Do a hard scan of all escape pods and keep a running tally of any that do not appear to be in the process of being rescued. Broadcast your list on a clear channel regularly. Take charge of vectoring in any vessels that ask, but we will not allow any vessels to approach Ajax.
