My feet buckled as I approached Benâs bed again. He was still sleeping peacefully, oblivious to the drama that only just took place, the tragedy that was averted. Tears began to stream down my face, as the enormity of his near loss dawned on me. Gently, I leaned my head on his chest, and cried. It was a good few minutes before I sensed the movement in the room. Hurriedly, I raised myself and wiped my tears, relieved to see it was only Phoenix. He was tenderly cleaning Leahâs face, arms and feet with a wet sponge, looking at me kindly. Phoenix was about ten years older than me. Rather handsome, softly spoken, nice young man. His gentle, somewhat introverted nature, was rather at odds with the noisy company I had surrounded myself with, so our paths seldom crossed. In one of the early missions, before my time at the bunker, Phoenix was badly shot in the leg, and ever since then struggled with a slight limp. Since then he rarely joined missions, but was a constant presence at the bunker, helping out where he could, supporting his close circle of friends and doing much of the outstanding cooking.
He silently put the sponge down, and approached me, as I was struggling to stop crying. Softly, he put his hand on my shoulder, and gave it a little stroke. His eyes were kind and thoughtful, his smile sympathetic. âLife here can get very hard sometimes,â he said quietly. âDonât let her get to you, Sunny,â he said. âJust, donât let her.â
He lightly patted my back, gave me an encouraging look, then limped back over to Leahâs bedside, where he picked up the sponge again. I watched him for a while. There was something rather calming in the peaceful, yet purposeful nature of the way he cared for her. My tears dried, my anger abated, but my mind was still busy. Donât let her get to you, Sunny⦠I couldnât help wondering, did he mean Jacqueline Roth⦠or Violet.
