I stop typing and squeeze my eyes shut. I can’t even bear to think about a day when I might not be in my son’s future. I delete the letter and turn off the phone. I’m too exhausted to find the right words, the ones that feel right. Hopefully, I’ll have more time to work it out before it’s too late. I get out of bed and head to Mason’s room. Climbing into his bed, I hold him tight, breathing him in, wishing this moment could be frozen in time.

About an hour later, I’m about to leave his room again when he calls out to me.

In the dark, he whispers, “Don’t leave me.”

Tears fill my eyes as I smile. “Never,” I whisper back. “I promise.”

But I know that someday soon, I may have to break that promise.
