Chapter Six

Big Plans

Present day

Camille was delighted when Elle phoned to let her know she would be coming to New York with a few friends. As much of a social butterfly as she was, Camille always felt more comfortable around people she knew well. Camille spent much of her time organizing charity events that required a lot of diplomacy and tact. Chairing and hosting events was always stressful, and she had to put on the “good” face for photographers and anyone covering the social calendar. Now, with social media and everyone owning a cell phone, one had to be very much on guard. A simple frown could create ridiculous chatter like “Socialite Scorns Husband at Gala.” Not that anything like that had happened to her, but she’d seen it happen to many of her friends. Everyone in her circle had a publicist they could call to quash the rumors. She sometimes thought how fortunate it was there had been fewer platforms on which to spread gossip and lies when J.R. was abducted. Thankfully, the ordeal had only lasted a few days, and no one got wind of it. The FBI had kept their word and the documents were as good as sealed.

Camille checked the guest list. At least a hundred people involved in the arts would be attending, from reporters to critics to agents. Neither was a problem when Camille was interviewing them. She had decided on working with twelve women at a time. Camille wouldn’t necessarily be teaching, but she would be mentoring and grooming them, and personally paying for their classes if donations were slim, which they often were. She hoped the women would develop into talent worth showcasing. Whether or not anyone gained fame or recognition, the program was a labor of love and would, hopefully, result in a sense of accomplishment and creativity for all involved.

As in most such programs, participants came and went. Interests peaked and waned, but the most recent group had shown great promise, and Camille had decided to challenge them to put together enough art for a show. It took five years for the dozen women to have five complete works each, ranging from oil, pastels, pen and ink and collage to sculpture. It was a diverse collection with the theme “My Journey.” Camille was confident the work would be well received and hired a PR firm to send out press releases. She wanted the
