CHAPTER 6

HAUNTED HIGHWAYS:

Ghost lights and wandering spirits

Just as members of the Straight Track Club had become increasingly frustrated that a clear explanation for ley lines had not been found, so it was with the ley revivalists by the beginning of the 1980s. The notion that there might be a spirit dimension to straight landscape lines had been discussed in the Portfolios of the Straight Track Club before the War, and mention had been made of the traditional Korean belief that evil spirits could only travel in straight lines and that the native roads were deliberately engineered to twist and turn to ward off malevolent influences. The contributor noted that some ancient Korean sites had straight tracks radiating from their centres and suggested that the arrangement was intended to disperse evil spirits from the sites. The Portfolios also contain references to feng shui, the Chinese art of placement. As in Korea, the ancient Chinese held similar beliefs about the nature of spirit travel. In China, straight roads were assiduously avoided so that evil spirits or ‘secret arrows’ had difficulty moving around.

In The View Over Atlantis (1969), John Michell revived these ideas, although no great attention was paid to them at the time. Almost as an aside, one of the plates in the book shows an old footpath that runs between Bromham and Westbrook in Wiltshire. The caption refers to the many stretches of old tracks that are said to be the seasonal routes of spirits. This particular path is reputed to be haunted by a misty white figure.

Ghosts and paranormal activity are frequently associated with stretches of old (and sometimes new) roads and trackways. Perhaps an examination of some of these traditional beliefs might shed light on the nature of the old straight track.
