Foothills of the Roc-Ki Mountains
Dannyâs back felt like one huge bruise. His legs had transcended pain and every movement he made seemed mechanical. Su Laana forged ahead as effortlessly as a leaf in a fast current.
Prior to this trek he had considered her a small, fragile woman who would benefit from his protection. Now he knew better. She had an inner reservoir of strength that completely stunned him. If it came to it he had no doubt she could carry him and his pack along with hers.
Long ago he decided that the only thing keeping him going was vanity. He wasnât about to let her show him up.
Su Laana stopped and dropped her pack.
âAre you okay?â he asked as he came up behind her.
She turned and gave him a wide smile. âI am very fine, Dan-nay. But I think we need to rest until tomorrow.â
He glanced around. âDonât we need to find a cave?â
âNo. The starship has left orbit to sample Yanivina. It will probably die.â
âHow do you know what itâs doing? Die? I heard they were going to use every lab precaution they can think of.â
âWe shall see.â She moved away and began making camp. âWe can cook tonight. It will be nice to make fire on a dark night. Low moon is in half phase and High Moon will not rise until dawn.â
Danny shrugged out of his pack and sat it against a tree. âHow much farther to the Sacred Grove?â
âTwo days, but they will be slower days.â
âWhy can we slow down all of a sudden?â
âBecause the humans no longer look for us and we must prepare ourselves for the immersion into the Sacred Grove.â
âImmersion? Is it under water?â
âNo, my lovely Dan-nay, it is not under water but in a very real way it is below the surface.â
âThe longer weâre out here the stranger you become, Su Laana.â
All the time they had been talking she had scooped out a fire pit, set stones around it and pulled leaf laden braches off of a feather bush. She bent over her pack and extracted a large blanket that soon settled over the pile of leaves.
Standing tall, she gave him an inviting smile and disrobed in seconds.
âYâknow, I thought I was exhausted,â He shucked out of his shorts and shirt in as many movements and walked to her.
As she pulled him down to her she said, âThis is the beginning of the immersion, my love.â
He dove deep.
