The name ‘platypus’ comes from the Ancient Greek word for ‘flatfooted’. Along with the echidna (a porcupine-like animal), the platypus belongs to an ancient group of egg-laying mammals called the monotremes. Semi-aquatic in nature, the platypus inhabits rivers and streams in mainland Australia and Tasmania.

This unusual animal is one of the few poisonous mammals in the world. Both male and female platypuses have spurs on their hind legs. However, it is only the male which can inject venom through these spurs. This venom is powerful enough to kill small animals such as dogs. Although not lethal to humans, it is extremely painful and the pain can last for several weeks.
