CHAPTER SIXTEEN

I’m not the kind of girl who wakes up in strange places or (worse) with strange men, and even though I am struggling to work out if I am alive, I panic at finding a body lying on the bed beside me. I realise pretty quickly that it’s Will, but I’m not able to take that particular thought any further. I have more pressing things to work out.

My mouth feels like something has crawled inside it and died, and the rest of my body feels like it met a rather large truck down a very dark alley. I try to pull myself towards the side of the bed, but even this is incredibly difficult. The bedcovers weigh a ton, and I feel like I’m trying to move through glue.

I lie back on my pillows for a moment and turn to look at Will. I register that he’s fully clothed, curled towards me with one hand flung out so that it rests only centimetres from me. He looks very peaceful. I have no idea what time it is, although it’s light outside, but I suppose I should be up and about. I stagger to the bathroom, holding the walls for support. I return to bed with a crash. There’s a soft sigh beside me.

‘Good morning,’ whispers Will. He hasn’t moved, but there is a sleepy smile on his face. ‘How are you feeling?’

I struggle to find the words. They don’t come, so I settle for a weak ‘Okay.’

‘You sure about that?’ replies Will. ‘Because you look like shit.’

I feel a smile form. ‘So do you,’ I retort, and it’s true, actually. He looks tired and something else, something deeper. I can’t hold the thought, though.

Will looks at his watch. ‘Christ! It’s nearly eleven. I can’t believe I’ve slept for eight hours solid.’

‘Oh my God, I’m supposed to be going to Jane’s today,’ I groan, realising that this might not be possible.

‘Ellie, it’s Monday.’

‘What?’

‘It’s Monday. Christmas Eve. You were supposed to go to Jane’s yesterday.’ He studies my face, which must look both bewildered and horrified. ‘It’s okay, though. I spoke to Jane yesterday and explained. She was quite worried when she hadn’t heard from you, but I’ve signed you off Christmas duties . . . and don’t look at me like that. Jane wouldn’t hear of you going over. You’re really not very well.’

I close my eyes, feeling teary. I’m never ill. I struggle to make sense of Will’s words. ‘So when did you arrive?’

‘Teatime yesterday. Finn noticed you had a light on, so I came over to investigate. Bloody good job too. I’m guessing you weren’t able to make it out of bed yesterday. You were burning up when I got here, so I stayed’ – he swallows – ‘just to make sure you were all right.’

I’m aware of something as he speaks. ‘Christ. I stink.’

Will smiles but makes no comment. He slides a lock of hair away from my cheek and then suddenly rolls off the bed and pads through to the bathroom.
