Epilogue
Philip Fröhlich felt his throat begin to tighten as he approached the office door that was open for the first time in his experience. He sidled up to the door, enough to see a tousled head of hair bent over a large table desk facing the door. He noted absently that there were a few strands of gray in the hair.
He tugged at his jacket to make sure it was straight, swallowed, and gave a diffident knock on the frame of the open door.
"Yes?" was the growled response. The bent head didn't move, but the pen that had been in motion paused.
"Master Gronow?"
"Yes," came another growl, but now the head raised. Dark brown eyes bored into him from under lowered brows.
"I'm . . . I'm Ph-Philip Fröhlich," Philip stammered. "I . . . uh . . ."
Gronow's countenance lit up and realigned itself into a beaming sun of a face as he threw the pen down on the tabletop and thrust himself to his feet. He stuck his hand out over the table. "Master Fröhlich!" the editor exclaimed. "Come in, come in!"
Philip entered the office and placed his hand in the editor's clasp, to find it firmly gripped and pumped like a machine. Gronow smiling was a younger man than Philip had expected or even than he had first appeared.
"It is so very good to meet you, my friend. Come, sit down." Gronow dropped back into his chair, and waved to a chair sitting across the table. "What can I do for you?"
Philip settled onto the edge of the chair. He was still somewhat nervous about this. "I, ah, wanted to come by and thank you for buying my story. I . . ." He ran out of words.
Gronow smiled. "Philip, my friend, to paraphrase an up-time saying, this is the beginning of what I foresee to be a long and beautiful and profitable relationship."
