NIGHTLIFE

SIN É

BAR

8 Coburg St.

21 450 2266

This is not the place for claustrophobics, but man, this bar has character. Letters, photos, and bank notes from past customers decorate every spare surface of this bar (that is, every surface that isn’t decorated with Irish paraphernalia). This pub has been loved. Even though the only walkway winds around the bar, the not-so-traditional yet somehow very Irish live music can be heard no matter where you are.

From the bus station, turn left onto Merchant’s Quay, then turn right onto Bridge St. Follow it over the bridge and turn left onto Coburg St.

Music most nights; call ahead to be sure.

Pints €3.90-7.50. Spirits €3.90-9.

Open M-Th 12:30-11:30pm, F-Sa 12:30pm-12:30am, Su 12:30-11pm.

CHAMBERS

BAR, GLBT

Washington St.

21 422 2860 www.chambersbar.ie

Plush white leather seats line the bar while high-backed booths offer a little more privacy for a midnight nuzzle. The dance floor is big enough to host a small village, but with either a live band or a DJ every night, Chambers keeps it full. Weekly events can range from trivia night to the Pride Prom; it’s hard to know what to expect next. Keep an eye on their website and we bet you’ll find something worth going out for.

From the tourist office, turn right onto Grand Parade, then left onto Washington St.

Pints €3.50-7. Spirits €4-8.

Open W 9pm-2am, Th-F 9pm-late, Sa 9pm-2am, Su 9-11:30pm.

JOHN REARDEN’S

BAR

26 Washington St.

21 427 4445 www.reardens.com

Located right in the middle of the pub and club center of Cork, Rearden’s seems to collect anyone still standing past midnight. You may start at other bars, you may have other plans, but at some point Rearden’s will call. Don’t worry, it calls to everyone else, too, so those neon-lit dance floors and smooth leather couches will be filled up with college students, internationals, and a few daring middle-aged tourists.

From the tourist office, turn right onto Grand Parade, then left onto Washington St.

Live music M, W, and F.

Pints €4.20-8. Spirits €4-10.

Open M-W 10am-11:30pm, Th-Sa 10am-12:30pm, Su noon-11:30pm.

WASHINGTON INN

PUB

30-31 Washington St.

21 427 3666

With exposed brick, stone walls, and a fireplace, the Washington Inn is about as cozy and old-fashioned as an Irish pub could be. The entire inside is composed of a half circle bar, and the small space around it is more often than not filled with college students. There could be raucous conversations at one end of the bar and a live band at the other and no one would know what the other was missing.

From the tourist office, turn right onto Grand Parade, then left onto Washington St.

Pints €4-4.50.

Open M-Th 10am-11:30pm, F 10am-12:30pm, Sa noon-10:30pm, Su noon-11:30pm.

an irish music primer

Maybe you saw Riverdance with your aunt when it came to town that time back in ‘02. Or maybe your mom gets teary-eyed whenever the Irish tenors are on PBS. You may have tried to respectfully distance yourself from the whole Celtic Women thing, but you’re going to Ireland now and it’s time to get serious. Chances are if you’re in a pub at night (which you will be), you’ll run into a jam session.
