Food in the Fast Lane

Even Paris, a city filled with fine dining, isn’t immune to the fastfood invasion. If escargots are a little too slow for you, get in the fast lane to some of these cheap joints:

• Quick Burger. Although it’s a clear rip-off of McDonald’s, Parisians prefer it to the original, even if they can’t get a Royale with cheese.

• Flunch. The chain was named after a portmanteau between “fast food” and “lunch,” which is now French slang meaning “to eat on the go” (fluncher). The food is cooked in minutes at the grill, including the steak, green beans, and potatoes meal. We’re not sure if that gives the cook enough time to determine whether the steak is “rosé” or “à point,” so dine at your own risk.

• Brioche Dorée. This chain patisserie sells all the usual tarts, morning croissants, and lunchtime baguettes. Located in some Metro stations, these identical shops mass manufacture pastries and are only redeemed by their gleaming glass cases and over-the-top gilded signs. After all, presentation is everything.
