EAST LONDON

Most of East London’s culinary offerings are packed into the unbeatable Brick Lane. If you’re looking for curry, you’d have to be blind (not to mention smell-challenged) to miss it. There are other ethnic restaurants of various stripes, as well as the requisite number of cafes for an area this rife with flannel and skinny jeans.

Cafe 1001

91 Brick Ln.

Hip East Enders bask in the British sun’s occasional appearances while chatting over coffee from Cafe 1001’s year-round outdoor cart. But they serve more than just coffee—the barbeque also grills all sorts of affordable burgers. Inside, patrons kick back in the warehouse-like space, where a variety of sandwiches and light food are served against a backdrop of Brazilian jams. At night, the salad bar turns into a real bar, and the back room becomes a venue for up-and-coming bands and DJs. Bloc Party filmed their video for “The Prayer” here. “East London is a vampire,” as the boys would say.

What Brick Lane is to Bengali food, this stretch of Kingsland Rd. is to Vietnamese. The service is swift and the dining room is bright and roomy.
