An Atypical Olympic Event

When the Olympics comes to town, there’s a lot of prep work that needs to be done: stadiums must be built, airports refurbished, new flavors of Gatorade invented, etc. But Barcelona took preparations for the 1992 Summer Olympics one step further. In the interest of fighting the city’s image as a no-holdsbarred, scandalously sinful, 24hr. party mecca, the Catalonian government declared a war on prostitution. Barcelona had to clean up its image, and the first step was taking care of the world’s oldest profession.

Don’t worry, no one sent out Spanish stormtroopers to prowl the streets of Barcelona looking for high heels and fishnets—the “war” ended up being peaceful, friendly, and quite polite. In typical European fashion, the government sent the ladies on vacation. Two weeks before the games began, the Olympic Committee drove around Barceloneta (at the time, the skeeziest of neighborhoods) in a coach bus, picked up all of the courtesans, and dropped them off at hotels on the outskirts of town for a month-long complimentary holiday. Problem solved!

Not. Today, prostitution remains a sensitive subject for locals. Last year, pictures that were printed by a major newspaper of British holiday-makers in uncompromising positions with Barcelonan ladies of the night caused quite an uproar. Barcelona attracts fun-seekers, but it’s not classless, city leaders argue. Maybe there is such a thing as too much fun?
