— CHAPTER FIFTEEN —

A Wild Night

After picking up Saundra, Duncan and his new friends continued on to the most unlikely spot. The parking place Aileen chose was an uneven track leading to a small wooded area, with the run-off from a lake streaming through it. Duncan wanted to say something to Aileen about the pitted aspect of the lane leading to his house, but thought better of it. Clearly, she was happy to put her car at risk to make out with Scott in the woods, but not to pick up someone who collected roadkill and other waste for a living.

As for the making out, Aileen and Scott started kissing as soon as they were under the canopy of trees.

‘Ignore them,’ Saundra said. She carried on walking, so Duncan fell into step with her.

He was a little embarrassed but also curious enough to admit he would have been a willing Peeping Tom. Still, he preferred the chance to be left alone for a few minutes in a situation where Saundra might speak to him.

She did more than that. She took a bottle from her coat pocket, unscrewed the top, took a swig and then offered him a drink.

‘Vodka,’ she said. ‘Or if yer prefer, ah have whiskey.’ She patted her other pocket. ‘Sometimes ah think Scott’s only happy for Aileen to bring me along because ah can cadge the occasional bottle.’

Duncan took the bottle and put it to his lips. After taking a sip, he couldn’t tell whether he was dizzy from the alcohol or the thought that Saundra’s lips had pressed against the bottle’s neck before his. In the dim light, he couldn’t tell if any lipstick remained on it.

‘They’ll catch us up in a minute,’ Saundra added. She stepped onto a fallen log and made a show of walking along it, arms out to either side for balance. ‘Hope yer didnae think this is a date.’

Duncan almost choked on his second sip of vodka. He coughed, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and passed over the bottle while trying to avoid her gaze. ‘Why would ah?’

All he heard in reply was the sound of sloshing as Saundra tipped up the bottle, taking another drink. He couldn’t help but watch.

Her lips, then his lips, and now her lips again. Duncan took a deep breath to ward off the chance of fainting. No doubt about it. Alcohol had nothing to do with his head spinning.

Saundra had noticed him watching. Her smile might have been a good thing; he only wished he knew how to interpret it. Though a struggle, Duncan chose not to look away. He was sure doing so would make his feelings even more obvious.

He heard Scott and Aileen before they pushed between the two of them.

Scott glanced over his shoulder. ‘Bring the whiskey.’

Saundra’s arm linked with Duncan’s and she tugged him along, her touch reassuring. What she said next, though, surprised him. ‘Yer no the only one who’s uncertain about what they’re doing staying here.
