A nervous chatter emanating from the stunned crowd, Stephanie could feel the anger boiling up inside of her. She couldn’t believe what she’d heard, but she hadn’t seen any reasonable way to stop it from happening. It was a slow-motion train wreck occurring as she watched, and she was helpless to stop it.

As Zac waved to the crowd and William uncomfortably scampered down the stairs off the front of the stage, Stephanie lunged toward Zac and touched his arm.

“We need to talk for a minute,” she said, then walked to a darker spot toward the back of the stage next to Michael. She saw a wry smile on Zac’s face as he joined them.

“What the hell was that?” Stephanie asked. “It was important that people left here feeling better, not worse. I’m trying to be reassuring, not scare them half to fucking death. And you undermine that? Why?”

Zac shrugged. “Guess I’m more interested in them knowing the truth than in pumping them full of happy drugs.”

“What does that mean?” Stephanie squinted, her mouth twisted in a grimace. “Telling them they’re in danger and we all need to be a part of the solution isn’t fucking ‘happy drugs.’ It’s true. But it lets them feel like they’re part of the solution. Which they are. Or they can be. You’re just telling them ‘The world sucks, now go hide in a corner.’”

“Well, maybe the world does suck, and maybe they do need to hide in a corner for a while,” Zac still had this smirk on his face that made Stephanie want to slap him as hard as she could. “And if so, it’s because you let it get that way.”

“Me?” Stephanie gestured wildly with her hands.

“Yes, you,” Zac said, sounding calm. “I know you think you’re perfect, but you’re not, even with your fancy Ivy doctor degree. Even you can make mistakes. And here, the evidence that you made multiple ones is Father Hayden’s dead body. Innocent men never died under Audrey’s wa—”

“She marched a bunch of women and children into the woods and left them to die, for fuck’s sake! Your wife and daughters were among them! You just talked about this!”

“Come on, Stephanie. I was just using that to make a point to the people. The fact is, that was a tough decision made in the best interests of the town. You can agree or disagree with it. Obviously, the fact that I lost my wife and daughters makes it hard for me to support it. But, no matter how you feel, that’s not the same as an upstanding member of the community being murdered in his own bed.”

“What could I have done to prevent…” Still incredulous, Stephanie started to speak, but then something struck her. “Wait. What do you mean he was murdered in his bed? Where’d that come from?”

Zac blinked, his expression going blank. “That’s what you said in your speech.”

“No. I never said that. I didn’t even know that. Still don’t. But you sounded like you do.
