The text message from James came just as the driver dropped her off on campus. After spending a day brainstorming, the fog from their disagreement had lingered, making it difficult for her to concentrate on anything else. She’d decided to face him sooner rather than later. They needed to clear the air and figure out where they went from here.

She punched in a quick reply that she’d be at his office in a few minutes. The elevator began the slow, creaking climb up the floors, giving her time to think. She should probably start by apologizing. While she wasn’t sorry about what she’d said, her delivery could have been better. It also hadn’t been her place to interfere or be so judgmental.

Even if she thought he was making a huge mistake by letting Becca continue to have a hold on him.

The elevator gave a quick jolt just before it came to the tenth floor, sending her stomach and heart tumbling. She breathed in deeply to settle both. She’d need to be steady when she came face-to-face with the professor.

When the doors slid open, he was leaning against the opposite wall, a messenger bag draped over his shoulder. His hands were shoved into his jean pockets as if he were auditioning to play Danny Zuko or one of the greasers in community theater. Hair messy, face unshaved, he looked just the way she’d left him the day before.

Only today he wasn’t glaring daggers at her. Instead, his gaze lingered over her as if he were waiting for her to bolt or attack.

Lucky for him, she wasn’t in the mood to do either.

“You’re here,” he spoke first, surprising them both. “You came back.”

“I’m not a quitter.” She lifted her chin.

They studied each other, each seeming to dare the other to speak first, like a game of verbal chicken.

In the end, James shrugged. “Okay.”

He pushed away from the wall, taking measured steps across the hall until he stood in front of her. His dark eyes peered down into hers. “Want to get out of here?”

Funny thing was, even though she’d only just arrived, she did. There was still so much to be said. Territory to cover. And doing it here, at the scene of the crime—where an adoring fan, maneuvering mother, or lingering ex could push into his office at any moment—didn’t feel right.

“Sure.” She tightened her grip on her oversized purse. “Amarillo Sour?”

He cracked a grin. “You read my mind. Wouldn’t be the first time.”

They stepped back onto the elevator and hit the ground level. The elevator creaked and groaned once again. Neither of them said anything. The awkwardness around them swirled like a cloud, filling the small car. Ali’s instinct was to cut through the silence in hopes that it would ease up that tension. But what could she say without getting into the heart of the matter? She’d already agreed to wait.

The elevator lurched. She grabbed onto James’s hand as it dropped a foot, fast. He squeezed her hand back as it came to a sudden halt.
