Ethan swore as he checked his weapon for the umpteenth time, using the special brush to dust off red sand, which immediately began building up again. The weapons should be able to handle anything, even the sandstorm which had plagued this part of the planet for the last six months, but he didn´t trust it one hundred percent. He still longed for days of clear skies and visibility beyond what was straight in front of him.

The squad had a lot of rookies, and only he and Optio Sharon remained of the original crew. Gavin and Helena had left for Heavy Infantry training some four months ago, and two months ago Siobhan had been accepted to Tech training. In his spare time Ethan now found himself spending most of his time alone or with the other decurions of the platoon, Ben Snow and Lisa Carr. Sometimes he´d talk to Optio Sharon, but the veteran legionnaire was more of an advisor than any ordinary friend.

He knew Julian was still around but the Tech people were usually kept on the far side of Camp Elysium and seldom mingled with the others. Most of what they were doing was probably top secret anyway. Only Ariel would sometimes bump into him. She headed one of Decurion Snow´s fire teams, and as far as Ethan could tell she was well on her way to a promotion. He, on the other hand, seemed to have reached a dead end. It would be years until he made Senior Decurion, which would normally be the most experienced NCO in the platoon or even Century, and he wasn´t even twenty yet.

Ethan was tired of the routine, tired of endless patrols through empty plains and treacherous fossae, constantly battered by the sandstorm that seemed to go on forever, obscuring what would otherwise be a beautiful landscape. He wondered, not for the first time, if he´d been right in refusing the BSC envoy´s offer. He could be traveling the galaxy now, seeing new planets and alien races, instead of slogging along, covered in dust. The only interesting parts were where the red dirt was broken by the occasional patch of lichen, one of the few visible proofs of the terraforming projects that would last for hundreds or maybe thousands of years. What if he´d taken the offer, would he be happier? Then he remembered the stick, which was the term the legionnaires had adopted amongst themselves for the envoy´s species, and the first thing that came to mind was its derogatory attitude toward humans. He remembered how he´d felt at the thought of serving this creature. The stick was gone now, of course, with the entire entourage, off to some other subject race, to remind them of their place in the universe and of who called the shots.

In a way, Ethan realized he understood why some people would oppose the BSC´s dominance, although he still didn´t think any of that justified assassination attempts or active resistance against the Earth government. Granted, Earth
