Tower of London

July 10, 1553

“READY?” CHARLES ASKED quietly. We were standing in a dank hallway beside the enormous doors that led to Jane’s makeshift throne room.

“That’s my line,” I quipped.

He smiled, moving so close that I could feel his breath on my cheek. I tipped my head back and met his honey gaze.

“For once, we are in my territory,” he whispered, brushing a kiss across my cheek while no one was looking. “Indeed, for the first time since I set foot upon Branson. I do believe that gives me the honor of asking the question.”

“Met a lot of queens, have you?” I teased.

“One or two,” Charles said smugly. Oddly enough, I sort of believed him. We hadn’t talked in any depth about his life in France or his time at boarding school in England. For all I knew, Charles met George V and Mary of Teck, the reigning British monarchs during his natural lifetime. I’d have to ask him about it later.

“Lock it up,” Gaige murmured in my ear as he and Molly joined us.

“You lock it up,” I said with a grin.

Gaige glanced around to make sure there was no one too close by. “Heard you met Cara,” he whispered.

“Yeah…we need to talk about that,” I replied. “There is some funky shite happening.”

Charles and Gaige hadn’t rejoined Molly and I until it was time to leave for the throne room, so we weren’t able to recap on either end. I was dying to know what Holton and the other Alchemists discussed with Charles. Gaige had likely listened at the door with a glass.

Unfortunately, our debriefings would have to wait; it was game time. Lord and Lady Holton strolled over with Susan in tow. The duchess greeted me warmly, leaning forward to brush her lips past each of my cheeks.

“Are you nervous?” Susan asked, appraising me with twinkling eyes. She looked like she was barely containing her excitement. “Lady Jane, the poor lamb, is still a little awestruck.” The duchess chuckled. “Meeting you both is probably more intimidating for her than it is for you; she believes you are representatives from the French court.”

“I am a little nervous,” I admitted. “But I suppose that’s normal. Thank you for arranging our rooms, Lady Clarmount. They are lovely. Is the duke with you? I was hoping to thank him as well.”

My question sounded innocent on the surface, but I was fishing for information. With the Holtons monitoring Charles and me, other conspirators must’ve been running the show during our visit. Susan and her husband were the most likely suspects, as far as I was concerned.

“The duke is resting, I am afraid.” Susan offered me a sad smile. “My husband is not as young as he once was, and the ride to London tired him. I will pass along your kind words.”

“Wonderful,” I replied warmly.

I glanced discreetly at Molly. She nodded once to indicate she overheard and caught my meaning. While Charles and I met with the queen, Molly and Gaige would investigate the duke’s whereabouts.
