Chapter 9 - Revelations

By morning the two who had been asleep on the mattresses were gone. When Whiskey asked Joe what they were doing, he replied simply. “Their duty.”

Edgar and Taylor woke up slow not long after sunrise, wearing the need for comfortable lodgings around sleepy eyes. They all could use a full day’s worth of rest. They weren’t going to get it. Whiskey felt half-awake himself. He only slept for a few hours and slept restlessly, dreaming of wandering about some medieval town where no one spoke his language, carrying around the feeling that he knew he should be somewhere else, that he had missed some detail of great importance.

The Sleepless Men seemed to move fluidly and naturally, long accustomed to short rest and bare bones living. Rebecca and Ben stood outside on the catwalk, chatting to each other casually while surveying the treetops.

Joe approached Whiskey, his features now visible in the daylight. His voice sounded much younger than his face— the tanned, creased skin and relaxed expression bespoke a man long committed to the life he had chosen.

“Thank you again for recounting the past and sharing what you know with us. There are many people back home who will be downright ecstatic to learn we’ve accounted for this gap in our records. It’s really quite exciting for me, I must admit.”

Whiskey chuckled. “Yeah, so excitin’.”

“Home?” Edgar met the man’s gaze. “Where is home for your order?”

“That’s something I can’t tell you.” He said, raising his eyebrows. “Not because I don’t want to. The location is quite hidden, even if you’re looking for it. Everyone in our order is sworn to keep it secret. Or else everything we’ve worked for could be at risk.”

Taylor smirked, grabbing a stick of jerky from a nearby jar. “Yeah, someone might steal all your technology that doesn’t work anymore and books that no one reads.”

Joe laughed, shrugging. “Can’t argue with you there. Still, we stay alive because we stay hidden.” He waved his hand with brow furrowed, intent on moving to another topic. “Anyway, what do you plan on doing from here? Maybe we can help you.”

“We’ve got to find the other Rangers deployed out here. Their lives are in serious danger if they don’t know about the ferals. And we need figure out what the hell happened out here and who’s behind this if we can. The Sons need all the information they can get if war is coming, and we’re the ones who can find out,” Whiskey said.

Joe nodded. He worked his mouth, deep in thought. “I think we can help you with some transportation. There are some abandoned vehicles not far from here that the factions have used. I do not recommend going back and trying to retrieve your own.”

Whiskey shook his head. “No, I reckon we ain’t goin’ back there. Not with the horde hanging around. How far are these vehicles?”

Joe squinted, doing mental estimation. “Not so far. We can show you the way.”

“That’d be a tremendous help.” Taylor said through a mouthful of jerky.
