Next morning, a group of seven young people make their way north, out of the town. Two of them ride on a horse: a young man and a dainty girl with a dirty face and blonde curls. She sits in front, nestling her back into her boyfriend's broad chest as he holds the reins. She has named the horse Daisy; she strokes her between the ears and promises her green fields with lots of lovely grass to eat.

One of the boys declares his new boots too big; his friend offers a trade: the boots for the warm, waterproof jacket.

All seven ate well this morning, ham, cheese and bread from a Lincolnshire farm, and flapjack made in a Norfolk kitchen, while Daisy the horse enjoyed a larger helping of oats than Luke Treleaven might have given her.

The seven are on their way to Blackthorn; they have a big bag filled with coins to spend.

A couple of blocks back, a painting of a fair-haired girl and a baby whisks down the silent streets and flutters into the air, where it floats away on the brisk November wind.
