Duke thanked Helena and left the café.

But as soon as he stepped onto the sidewalk, he noticed two men across the street.

They tried to look casual—one like he was checking something on his phone, the other like he’d paused from a jog.

They were cops.

Duke was sure of it.

They’d followed him, hoping Duke would lead them to Andi.

He couldn’t let that happen.

Remaining casual, he started down the street. He wasn’t sure where he was going—but definitely not to the hotel where Beau and Andi were staying.

First, he’d confirm these guys were following him.

He strolled several blocks until he reached Cook Inlet. He paused near a bench and stared out over the water, acting as if he were simply getting some fresh air and enjoying the view.

He slid on his sunglasses before peering on either side of him.

The man on the phone. He was there. A decent distance away, where most people probably wouldn’t notice him.

This time he had his phone to his ear as he paced.

A few minutes later, the jogger paced by on the sidewalk behind Duke.

Duke was definitely being tailed.

He needed to look into things, but he couldn’t afford to have these two following him.

That meant he would need to lose them.

As he glanced in the distance, he saw his answer.

The trolley.

Moving quickly, he rushed toward the nearest stop and mingled with the crowd. He paid his fare and then took his place at the back.

He peered out the window and saw the man who’d been on his phone staring at him.

The jogger had stopped as well.

But they were too late.

Duke had gotten away for now.

But his freedom wouldn’t last long.
