Steering systems

If the boat is equipped with a tiller, usually all connections are visible even while the boat is in the water. A tiller is usually hinged, so that the tiller can swing up out of the way. Inspect all connections for cracks in the metal or the hull and for loose parts.

The wheel steering systems tend to be a complexity of drive wires and fittings. Some manufacturers recommend a particular frequency of lubrication. As always with these wires, check for any fraying, and check for any corrosion on fittings. Any wire with the slightest sign of fraying should be replaced at the first opportunity. Corrosion may just be on the surface and can be cleaned off, but be sure it isn’t deep or hiding a crack.
