Crowns Aglow with Stars

We are children of God, members of Jesus’ royal family—our Father’s light shining through the clouds of others’ sorrow. Pop your imaginary (for now) crown on your head, unleash your brightest smile, and go spread some joy!

Have you ever noticed how one person with a bright smile can light up a room full of sourpusses? Think of the woman described as a “wondrous sign” near the end of Revelation, who was “clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and a crown of twelve stars on her head.” 14 Just imagining the light given off by such an image makes me want to reach for my sunglasses! But that’s the kind of impact we can have as we bring God’s Word to those still struggling through their own cesspool.

Empowered by this image, we can walk confidently through life’s darkest night. As Norman Vincent Peale often reminded his listeners, we’re “not supposed to crawl through life on [our] hands and knees,” with our faces in the mud. 15 Let your light shine! Deliberately choose to look for joy in every step of your journey through life and to share it with others. When you do, you will be blessed with happiness no matter what your circumstances are. Remember what Jesus told us to do: “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” 16

Just as one little pinch of salt can make all the difference in cooking, the light of one joyful Christian can radiate the love of Almighty God to the world. That reminds me of the story about the rich man who called his three sons to his bedside as he was dying. He told them, “I want to leave my fortune intact, so I will set each of you the same task to see which one is the most capable at managing money. In my warehouse there are three large storerooms, all of the same size. Here is a bag of silver each. Your task is this: Each of you fill one storeroom with as much as your silver will buy.”

The first son thought long and hard about how he could get the most bulk for his money. He used his silver to buy sand. But even though his money could buy several wagonloads, when the silver ran out, the storeroom was only one-third full.

The second son spent all his silver on plain soil, but it filled only half of his storeroom.

The third son watched his brothers try unsuccessfully to fill their storerooms with the silver their father had given them. Then he spent just a few silver coins and bought some candles and matches . . . to fill his room with light. 17
