âSounding good, Murray.â Aidan draped his stethoscope around his shoulders, smoothed his hand over the little beagleâs neck and head examining him for lumps, then took a look at his mouth. Slipping the dog a small treat, Aidan turned to his owner. âYouâre doing a great job with him, Vern. Time to get his teeth cleaned though. We did his bloodwork today, so all you need is an appointment. You can set that up with Bev on the way out.â
âThanks, Doc.â
âYouâre very welcome. Howâs Helen doing after her hip replacement?â
The older man clipped Murrayâs leash on him. âBetter now than she was. She sure doesnât like slowing down.â
âTell her sheâll be running around again in no time.â Aidan exited the small examination room into the back area. He scrubbed his hands, then dictated a few notes to add to Murrayâs file, a time-saving technical device heâd convinced Karl was worth the investment.
Had Leah arrived yet? He sure hoped she could help Bev figure out Karlâs accounting system. Aidan strode into the office.
Bev stood at the reception window, her graying head bobbing as she talked and laughed with Vern, whoâd been one of her high school classmates.
Leah sat at Bevâs desk, her dark hair cascading around her shoulders, partially draping her pretty face and parting to expose her long, creamy neck.
Aidan stopped dead.
She looked up, her eyes widening behind her glasses when she saw him.
âYou⦠look⦠amazing,â he said.
She smiled. âThanks.â
âYour hair isâ¦â He just stared at her.
âDown?â
âBeautiful!â
âItâs amazing what warm, running water can do for a gal,â she quipped.
âYou smell fantastic, too.â
âNo lingering barn odors?â
He took a deep breath of her subtle and very captivating perfume. âAbsolutely none.â
âThanks for inviting me to use your place to tidy up.â
âOf course.â
Bev cleared her throat.
He dragged his gaze from Leah to focus on Bev. âDoesnât she look great?â
âShe does. Leah, I think you need to get out of the barn more often.â
Leah flushed a soft shade of pink.
Just when Aidan had thought she couldnât look any prettier. But she was embarrassed, so maybe heâd keep that observation to himself. âMaking sense of Karlâs system?â
âNo problems. Iâm just setting up accounts and transferring this yearâs numbers to Bevâs computer, and sheâll be good to go.â
âSheâs been explaining it to me,â Bev said. âSheâs smart as well as pretty.â
Aidan smiled. âShe is.â
âCandace James is waiting in exam room two with her big greyhound. Florence is due for her regular exam. Will you be ready anytime soon?â
âAbsolutely.â Taking Florenceâs folder from Bev, Aidan headed for exam room two.
He was in for it now. Bev loved to tease, and she was never going to let him live down his reaction to Leah, was she?
The morning seemed to drag by as Aidan handled appointments with only an occasional glimpse of Leah working with Bev in the office. Just knowing she was there kept him on edge. And anticipating time together without a million chores demanding their attention made him a little nervous.
But a great lunch was definitely called for.
