There are many types of systems, and within those systems there are different types of rust. This section presents a few of the most common types of rust.

The rust in software systems is known as technical debt. Even a well-designed system will start to have inefficiencies in it over time that make it harder to change. This is a similar concept to money debt. With money debt, you have to pay interest on that money with money. With technical debt, the developers of the system have to pay the interest of that debt with time because it becomes slower to make changes. Unless this technical debt is managed well, they will only be paying the interest and never the principle. This means that the slowness will keep accumulating.
