Gregory was being burned from the inside out by a raging hell fire. He had no right to disobey orders like this, no right to detour southwest on the trip he was supposed to be making to Utah; but heâd been unable to help himself. If he didnât lay eyes on his love again, if he didnât hear her voice one last time, he would surely have expired.
Just seeing how much weight sheâd lost and the sadness in her, that he alone was responsible for, was ripping him into an infinite number of pieces this very minute.
By the time he raised his head, both their faces were drenched in tears. âI already sent a telegram to my superiors,â he confessed. âI disobeyed orders by coming here. They will send someone to fetch me, and I will have to face the consequences.â
âWho are your superiors, Gregory Armstrong?â
âI am not at liberty to say. But this. This I can tell you.â He grimaced. âWhatever punishment I will face, it was worth it. Seeing you again was worth it.â
âNo, I do not accept this. I will not let it be over. We will leave together. Tonight.â She gripped his shoulders. âI am a very wealthy woman. We can go anywhere in the world. Catch a ship overseas if we want.â
He cupped her face in his hands. âIf only I could, my precious girl. I would give you everything. I would give you the world.â
She flung her arms around his neck and tugged him down for another kiss. âYou already have, by returning to me. Youâre all I ever wanted, Gregory. Not everything else. Not the world. Just you.â
He kissed her slowly and tenderly, basking in the warmth of a love he didnât deserve from a woman whose trembling smiles would turn to bitter glares, if only she knew the truth about him.
âCome with me.â She reached for the glass behind them, turned a handle, and pushed it open.
He was amazed to realize theyâd been standing by a door all this time. Heâd mistakenly presumed it was a window.
She led him to the gazebo where theyâd spent so many happy hours in months gone by. By the time they ascended the stairs, she was shivering with cold.
âYouâll catch your death out here,â he protested, unbuttoning his jacket and throwing it around her shoulders.
âThen weâll find a different place to talk. Letâs keep moving.â She tugged him across the gazebo and down the opposite set of stairs. A minute later, she flung open the carriage house doors. âHere. This is better, so long as you donât mind the dark.â She led him to her auntâs carriage. âWe can sit here for a spell.â
Once inside the carriage, she snuggled against his side. âSomeday youâre going to tell me everything, Gregory Armstrong.â
âI want to,â he muttered against her temple. âIâve never cared to keep secrets from you. Please believe me when I say it eats away at me, day and night.â
âThen I will share my secrets, instead.â She reached up to cup his cheek.
