A former display at the Lava Beds National Monument visitor center featured items found on or near Captain Jack’s Stronghold and other battlefields during the Modoc War. The exhibit included cartridges, part of an Army canteen, a bayonet, and cannonball fragments.

This sign marked the location of Bloody Point, so named because several white settlers were killed by Modocs there in 1849. The area, located near Tule Lake, was often used as an overnight camp by travelers. Modocs hid in the nearby boulders before attacking. Historian Keith A. Murray described the site as “possibly the grimmest spot in the history of emigrant travel.”
