Another Funeral

Post-outbreak day 24, early evening

Tank watched the sun as it sank into the sky before them, Infection by Beartooth playing in the background. They’d passed into the Yukon—the only territory standing between them and Alaska. If they kept this pace, they could be in Tok the next day. That thought brought a smile to his face. Things were finally going according to plan. If only the brothers were here, and Tank found himself missing Emmett as well.

“Will we have our own house at this lodge?” Chloe asked.

“I wouldn’t call it a house,” Tank said. “But we’ll have our own cabin, yeah.”

“Then how do we cook and do laundry? And shower for that matter?”

“I think they have some kinda sauna for showers and the lodge has a big kitchen. I’m not sure about laundry.”

“I guess it’ll be better than this.”

“Oh, yeah.”

“What’ll we do out there? Just survive?”

“I’m guessin’ we’ll be plenty busy for the first few months as we get things up and runnin’. After that we’ll all have our own jobs to keep the community goin’. Kind of like a commune.”

“Before all this I would’ve thought that was weird. But now, with this group, it doesn’t sound so bad.”

Tank laughed. “Yeah, it won’t be too bad.”

“What’re you most excited for?” Tank looked over at her, a twinkle in his eye. She giggled and slapped him on the shoulder. “Besides that,” Chloe said with a smile.

“I hear there’s a good stream to fish for salmon and two lakes that are full of graylin’ and lake trout. I’m excited to get some fishin’ in.”

“I forgot you liked to fish so much.”

“It was a way for me and Grandpa Carter to hang out and talk about life. I always felt at peace on the water. Like I was just a small fish in a big pond. Pun intended.”

Chloe laughed. “Well, I’m excited for you to teach me how to fish. But I’m also excited to have my own space. I don’t even remember what privacy feels like.”

“Yeah, that’ll be nice.”

“Do you know how cold it’ll get in the winter?”

“I’m not sure, but probably in the negatives.”

“What? How are we going to survive in that?”

“The buildings are all insulated and have wood heat. That and lots of warm clothes when you go out.”

“But I’ll freeze the second I step outside!”

“How d’ya think our ancestors did it?”

“They weren’t stupid enough to live in Alaska. At least, mine weren’t.”

Tank chuckled. “It won’t be that bad. We’ll just have to make sure we have enough supplies stockpiled for winter.”

“So, what was that man saying to you when we left Coutts?” Chloe asked, randomly.

He could tell she’d wanted to ask this question for a while now.

“That was Tom. He’s the one who built Frostmourne for me. When I took the sword, he made me promise to make the world a better place for my kids. His son died early on durin’ this and I think I reminded Tom of him.”

“Oh,” Chloe said and then stopped as a voice came on over the radio.
