Chapter Seventeen

Sophie’s ears rang from the incredible jolt that had jumped from Lar to everyone in the room. It hadn’t been the same as the electricity Tobek used to shock Lar’s hearts. Her shielding had only let enough of Tobek’s voltage through to make her hands sting with the worst pins-and-needles of her life.

The bright blue lightning that arced between them all was something else—something that had filled every cell in her body with an energy that lit her up past the brim. She’d never felt more alive. Her spine was electrified, the skin on her back was crawling with power. Was it some kind of side-effect of holding onto Lar while Tobek shocked him?

She thought she had heard Lar’s voice just afterward. Was she imagining things? Fear and hope coiled through her. Her heart raced and her mouth went dry. She was afraid to look up at Lar—afraid he really would be gone. But what if he wasn’t? He shifted beneath her, his arms wrapping around her as he sat up. Her eyes filled with tears that quickly overflowed down her cheeks. She squeezed her eyes shut tighter. She barely dared to breathe.

“Please be real. Please be real,” she chanted to herself. She had wanted this so desperately, she couldn’t believe he was back.

“Sophie,” he said in his gentle voice.

He shifted her away, but only far enough for him to swing his legs over the side of the table. He drew her closer as he stood. She wrapped her arms around his chest, wanting to feel him and help if he needed to be steadied. He didn’t waver at all.

How was this real? He couldn’t go from being… from being how he was a moment before to standing next to her as if nothing had happened.

She pressed her hands firmly against his sides, just above his hearts. A strong beat pounded against her palms—rapid, like hers, though one was a tiny bit off from the other. He pulled her against his bare chest and held her, stroking her hair as she cried.

“By the Maker,” Kral said behind her.

“I can’t believe that worked.” Nuar’s voice was full of awe.

“I can’t believe he survived it,” Tobek said. There was a heavy pause before he added, “Like you were thinking any differently.”

A laugh burst through Sophie’s tears, and she squeezed Lar harder. She still couldn’t believe this was real. All the skin along her spine prickled up into goosebumps so intense, it wouldn’t have surprised her to see little spine plates of her own forming above it.

Lar pulled her closer, his cheek resting on the top of her head. His chest vibrated as if he was letting out a low, steady hum, and her fingers tingled as they neared his spine. She was careful not to touch his spine plates after what had happened in the shard. Her heart sank at the memory. She had saved him, but had anything really changed?

“I can’t believe that humans do this regularly,” Bron said.

Becca laughed. “We’re tougher than we look.
