VENGEANCE

One

Lanyon cowered in the back room of a dirty apartment listening for footsteps. He knew he should have taken more time to recuperate. His right leg and side ached mercilessly. The tedium of three weeks in a Vermenian hospital, plus a month of being tended by Predamor, and another month lollygagging in his own rooms in Malcosia City had him on the verge of blowing his brains out. So when the nice, little old Malcosian woman pocketmailed him, he jumped at the chance to get back to work. He charged up his rator and set out.

“Mr. Lanyon, thank you. Thank you so much for responding. Please come in." The woman looked ancient, her tail withered and drab.

Honna flashed through Lanyon’s mind.

The old woman caught his repulsed glance at her tail and slithered it under her long dress.

Honna. Honna’s tail. Honna’s affection. Lanyon focused. “What can I do for you?” he asked after explaining that his Selenian translators made the bulky translator the woman held to her throat unnecessary.

“Please, take a seat,” she said.

The woman lived in an exclusive area of Malcosia City, three miles from the spaceport, far enough from the bustle, chaos, and rough customers to allow a seemingly tranquil life. She introduced herself. “My name is Mella Pufan, and I need your help.”

“What can I do for you?" he asked, waving away the woman’s offer of food, afraid she might eat too. He did not enjoy the sight of Malcosians shoveling in the heaps of food they needed at every meal.

“I own a certain property, Mr. Lanyon, on the outskirts of Vermenia, a neighborhood called Freton. The property provides my income. Apartments. Are you familiar with Vermenia?”

“I’ve been there a few times.”

“Certain apartments in my building, three of them, are giving me trouble. They haven’t paid their rent in several months now, and I’d like them out.”

“Don’t you have any legal recourse?”

The old woman shooed away Lanyon’s suggestion with a wave of her hand. “Takes too long. I want you to persuade them to leave immediately. I’ll pay you well.” The woman named a surprising stipend for Lanyon’s involvement and promised to print him out a planetcredit card in immediate payment.

“How expensive are these apartments, anyway?” he asked.

The woman ignored Lanyon’s question. “These people are causing me to get complaints from the other tenants, and I want them out.”

“How large is the building?”

“Seven floors. Fourteen apartments.”

“Are the other eleven rented out?”

“Yes, six leases come due in a few months, and I’m afraid they won’t renew because of the trouble these apartments are causing.”

“What kind of trouble?”

“Noise. Discourtesy. And they are not paying me.” Mella Pufan emphasized the third of the three failings.

“Tell me what I need to know.”

Lanyon made the ninety-minute flight to Vermenia early the next day. He decided not to look in on Predamor, wary of his friend, who did chores for the government, signing him up for another exploit he would end up regretting. He summoned a lapima taxi, a slow-moving craft which traveled no more than six inches off the ground, and set out on the twenty-minute ride to Freton.
