Chapter Thirteen
Autumn
The icing is clumpy and the cake wonât win any baking show awards but Cadence will love it anyway and thatâs all I care about.
Landon walks in while Iâm trying to smooth over the last bare spot with a butter knife.
âI saved you some coffee,â I tell him and then step back to admire my handiwork.
He pours a mug and then stands beside me. Though itâs nearly noon I havenât seen him yet today.
âI didnât hear you come in last night,â I say and then cringe because it sounds like Iâm keeping tabs on him.
Landon doesnât seem to mind. âAfter I was done working at the bar I drove around for hours. I didnât realize what time it was until I saw the sky getting light.â
I look up at him. His short hair is wet from the shower and he smells of soap, the musky scent of the shower gel he always uses. This is doing awkward things to my impulses right here in the kitchen. He hasnât shaved in a while, adding an extra layer to his masculine charm. I think I could stare at him for hours and not get bored.
However, Landon has now noticed that Iâm gazing at him with slack-jawed lust and heâs confused. âWhatâs wrong?â
âNothing. Just admiring your new beard growth.â
âWant me to shave it?â
âNo.â
He grins and sets the coffee mug down. âYouâve got some chocolate icing on your face.â
I stand completely still as his thumb brushes my right cheek. My heart pounds, as it always does when heâs close. Iâve become very familiar with these feelings, of a desire so powerful it leaves me lightheaded. His hand lingers and his eyes find mine.
âIs it gone?â I ask, hoping he doesnât take his hand away.
But he does take his hand away. Then, almost as if he knows heâs killing me, he licks the chocolate from his finger. If I were at all inclined to faint, then that move would have probably sent me to the floor. As it is, Iâm having trouble breathing in and out.
Landon gestures to the table. âWhatâs the cake for?â
Iâm thankful to move away from X-rated thoughts. âItâs for Cadence. Did you know she was released from the hospital this morning?â
âYeah. I talked to Tristan. He said she and the babies were doing fine so the doctor let her go home.â
âSheâll be on bed rest until she gives birth.â
âHe told me that too. He says sheâs bummed about being on bed rest but sheâs glad to be home.â
I shift the cake plate and examine the rather rough looking creation. âIâm going over there as soon as I do some more cosmetic work on this cake. You want to come?â
He shifts his weight. His face is troubled. âI might stop by later. Right now Iâm going to look for my brother. Apparently our motherâs out of town with her boyfriend but Iâm sure she wouldnât care where he was even if she were here. The house seems deserted so I donât think heâs been back there.
