Chapter Thirteen

Autumn

The icing is clumpy and the cake won’t win any baking show awards but Cadence will love it anyway and that’s all I care about.

Landon walks in while I’m trying to smooth over the last bare spot with a butter knife.

“I saved you some coffee,” I tell him and then step back to admire my handiwork.

He pours a mug and then stands beside me. Though it’s nearly noon I haven’t seen him yet today.

“I didn’t hear you come in last night,” I say and then cringe because it sounds like I’m keeping tabs on him.

Landon doesn’t seem to mind. “After I was done working at the bar I drove around for hours. I didn’t realize what time it was until I saw the sky getting light.”

I look up at him. His short hair is wet from the shower and he smells of soap, the musky scent of the shower gel he always uses. This is doing awkward things to my impulses right here in the kitchen. He hasn’t shaved in a while, adding an extra layer to his masculine charm. I think I could stare at him for hours and not get bored.

However, Landon has now noticed that I’m gazing at him with slack-jawed lust and he’s confused. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Just admiring your new beard growth.”

“Want me to shave it?”

“No.”

He grins and sets the coffee mug down. “You’ve got some chocolate icing on your face.”

I stand completely still as his thumb brushes my right cheek. My heart pounds, as it always does when he’s close. I’ve become very familiar with these feelings, of a desire so powerful it leaves me lightheaded. His hand lingers and his eyes find mine.

“Is it gone?” I ask, hoping he doesn’t take his hand away.

But he does take his hand away. Then, almost as if he knows he’s killing me, he licks the chocolate from his finger. If I were at all inclined to faint, then that move would have probably sent me to the floor. As it is, I’m having trouble breathing in and out.

Landon gestures to the table. “What’s the cake for?”

I’m thankful to move away from X-rated thoughts. “It’s for Cadence. Did you know she was released from the hospital this morning?”

“Yeah. I talked to Tristan. He said she and the babies were doing fine so the doctor let her go home.”

“She’ll be on bed rest until she gives birth.”

“He told me that too. He says she’s bummed about being on bed rest but she’s glad to be home.”

I shift the cake plate and examine the rather rough looking creation. “I’m going over there as soon as I do some more cosmetic work on this cake. You want to come?”

He shifts his weight. His face is troubled. “I might stop by later. Right now I’m going to look for my brother. Apparently our mother’s out of town with her boyfriend but I’m sure she wouldn’t care where he was even if she were here. The house seems deserted so I don’t think he’s been back there.
