Chapter 15

After a quick stop at a drive-through to pick up some lunch, Hannah and Carolina pulled into the small suburb of Charlotte. The neighborhood was older with unassuming homes dating in the eighties.

“I didn’t think this is where Fred would be living. When he was living in Hopeton, he had a nice house in Garden Gate.”

Garden Gate was a gated neighborhood that had a stunning golf course. Fred’s three-story home was one of the finest in the area.

“You didn’t mention a wife. Did Fred never marry?”

Hannah turned and glanced over at Carolina. “He was married to Lydia, but they divorced soon after James and Fred started Stars Global. They never really seemed to be a good fit as a couple.”

“What do you mean?” Carolina asked.

“Every time we went out to dinner, Lydia never went. Fred was always making an excuse for her. She would have a headache, or she was out of town with her mom, or she had another engagement.” Hannah frowned. “Fred had us over for dinner at his house and even then, Lydia wouldn’t be there. It was like they were more or less roommates.”

“How odd.”

“I certainly thought so. When I asked James about the situation, he said that some couples weren’t as fortunate as us,” Hannah sighed.

“Look, someone is having a yard sale.” Carolina pointed to the house on the left with a driveway full of items for sale. “I might have to take a peek before we leave.”

Hannah chuckled and shook her head. When the navigation system informed said they had reached their destination, her stomach tightened with dread.

She stopped in front of a white house with a tiny porch and a carport.

Hannah shook her head. “This can’t be right. This house is too…”

“Modest?” Carolina offered.

Hannah nodded. “Yes. And Fred was anything but modest.”

“Well, we might as well go see if he’s home.” Carolina reached for the door handle.

Hannah suddenly grabbed her arm, stopping her. “Carolina, I’m afraid of what I’m about to find out,” she admitted, her voice trembling ever so slightly.

Carolina patted Hannah’s hand and smiled. “Whatever it is, I’ll face it with you, and you will get through this, okay?”

Hannah quietly nodded, took a deep breath and got out of the car. She walked around and met Carolina on the dingy sidewalk.

“I’ll go up and knock. You wait here.” Hannah stared at the house.

“You’ve got this, Hannah,” Carolina reassured.

On shaky legs, Hannah made her way up the walkway to the door. For some reason her footsteps seemed to echo loudly and she wondered if Carolina could hear her heart pounding in her chest like a jackhammer.

Reaching the door, she steadied herself and then knocked.

Seconds seemed to stretch to eternity as she waited.

When no one answered, she knocked again, this time louder and longer.

“I don’t think he’s home.” Carolina appeared at her elbow.

Hannah nearly jumped out of her skin. She’d been so concentrated on the door opening that she hadn’t heard Carolina approach.

Hannah turned to the empty carport. “You’re probably right. There’s no car.
