The respite in the weather ceased and snow started falling again, sapping what little resolve she had left. When her horse stumbled and struggled to its feet, she knew it needed rest and food, too.

"I can't go on," she whispered to herself. "I just can't."

Her horse topped a hill and she reined it to a stop, squinting to look. A few huts lay below.

"God be praised!" She prodded the palfrey on. Reaching an outlying hut first, she thought to go in but a noise stopped her. Removing her hood to listen, she heard men's voices coming from above, in the loft, she assumed.
