Chapter ten

Yarrow found himself standing in front of the shop keeper, who had been tied to a chair. A metal one, that Tiera had made for him, using the store’s Maker. The machine, a truly magical creation, that, if he had the idea right, wasn’t really there at all, being more of an idea than a physical object, was fast. There were also some stout ropes, even though the idea of making shackles had been discussed. The other men there, one of whom had been in the back room, sorting goods for people for pick up or delivery, were cleared and sent away, for their own protection.

Yarrow had done that part.

All but pushing them from the store, not certain what was about to happen at all. It didn’t seem like it was going to be good, whatever it was.

It was frightening, standing there, since he wasn’t facing the chair bound criminal, who apparently wasn’t going to get a fair trial, but rather was facing down the two giants, who both bent over him, trying to get him to move with their fearsome faces and incredible size. Neither of them had joints that connected correctly, either. He wasn’t a bio-geneticist or anything, but part of what seemed off about them was how their tendons connected. Further up on the bones of the arms than was normal. That should, he figured, increase their strength by several times, over whatever they had going on already. Dareg was vastly muscular, as well. It occurred to him, not for the first time, that some of the people there might not be strictly human, the way he thought of them. These two were, if nothing else, immortal, as well.

Standing to the side, wide eyed and panting softly, was the Council member, who kept alternating between looking at Yar and Tiera, as if they were going to be fighting over the disposition of the annoying shopkeeper. The situation felt like that to him, too.

He tried to make himself seem calm, and not shake, openly. It was hard to pull off.

“No. You will not be harming this man today. For one thing, you both already read his mind and we have a truth amulet on him. So, you two need to both take a few steps back. Now.” He glared, ready to fight if he had to, but also understanding that Dareg at least would be able to take him almost instantly, if that happened. He didn't know about Tiera, but she was over two meters tall, by a good head and frankly, her body simply wasn’t proportioned correctly. She wasn’t looking down at him by too much, but it was enough to be daunting.

Instead of beating him, the woman screamed.

“Ugh! Do not get in my way, Ull! He broke the law!” The words were nearly growled, and the pale woman stepped forward, her hand moving to grab him by the shirt front.

That move paused, hanging in the air, which had the lady looking shocked for a brief moment, then moving back, her face going hard again.
