HO-CHUNK, HOUSING. In the previous two postcards, note the presence of historically inaccurate Ho-Chunk housing, a teepee domicile, probably in place to cater and market to tourists. Traditionally, the Ho-Chunk constructed several different types of lodges that varied in material and size depending on the season and purpose. Occasionally, small teepees were used for short berry gathering or hunting excursions; however, a more representative traditional home would be a domed wigwam, also known as a round house or ciiporoke, similar to what is depicted in the image seen here. This c. 1905 image shows living quarters and a cooking tent for use in the warmer months. Note how the sides are raised for airflow. Over the years, different materials were adopted to cover lodges. Early materials included cattail mats, deer hides, and sheets of bark. This later depiction shows a canvas-covered dwelling. Charles Van Schaick of Black River Falls, Wisconsin, took this image. He avoided the stereotypical photographic representations of Native Americans, producing images not for tourists or mass consumption but rather images intended for the Ho-Chunk themselves.
