"Where are we going, Nelly?"

"Back to Nuu Hall."

"Nuu Hall?" Kris asked, puzzled.

"The hall that holds the OCS is named after one of your ancestors. I do not know which one."

That was not Kris's problem at the moment. "How do they know I brought you with me, Nelly? Have you been sneaking around other people's databases again?"

"I have not," Nelly said with an offended sniff. "You told me to stay quiet, and I have. Someone has been pinging me, but I did not respond. I am just as puzzled as you are. I thought Aunt Trudy had given me the best available security suite, as well as a top-of-the-line hacking and cracking module."

"I will have to talk to Auntie Tru about this when I get the chance." Kris knew that her Aunt Tru had fought in the Iteeche War. Everyone of Grampa Ray or Trouble's generation had fought the Iteeche. Still, the awe in the other cadet's voice as he spoke of her was a surprise. Maybe Kris needed to get to know some of her childhood "aunts" and "uncles" better.

She'd written research papers on Grampa Ray’s and Grampa Trouble’s exploits in the war. Maybe she should have delved into those around her, as well, and discovered their stories.

It was certain that none of them talked about the war. It seemed all they wanted to do was forget it. They never raised the topic, and Kris had learned to ignore the huge elephant in the room just like they did.

Kris did a right turn into the square in front of Nuu Hall. "Where do I go from here?" she asked Nelly

"Third floor. Or deck. That is where his office is."

Kris double-timed it up the steps into Nuu Hall, then through the hallway, er, passageway. At a broad stairwell, she paused for a moment.

"How do you double-time going up stairs?" she asked herself, then answered her question. "Let's don't and say we did."

She went up three flights of stairs quickly, but safely.

"Turn right on the third floor," Nelly told her before Kris ask. "Deck," her computer corrected herself.

A moment later, Kris stood in front of a door announcing CAPTAIN BAINBRIDGE, COMMANDING OFFICER. She paused for a moment to catch her breath.

Three deep breaths later, she was as ready as she'd ever be. She opened the door.

Kris stepped into an outer office. It was grey. Grey on gray, with more gray. Of four workstations, only one was occupied. A woman sporting first class petty officer's chevrons didn't even bother to look up from her desk.

"What's the matter, you raised in a barn? Didn't your mama teach you not to barge through strange doors without knocking? Now, get your tiny ass out of here."

For a moment, but only a moment, Kris considered how she would pin that woman's ears back if she'd pulled that on anyone at a campaign headquarters. However, Kris wasn't the Prime Minister's brat but rather a no-name cadet.

I have to keep reminding myself of that or I'll be in an even worse mess.
